Virtually anything goes at Burning Man. The temporary art community reinvents
itself with a new theme each year the week before Labor Day in Nevadas
Black Rock Desert, a dry lake bed 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Reno. Participants,
many from the San Francisco Bay Area, pay up to $250 to experience the weeklong festivities.
Last years event (when the theme was the Body) drew almost 26,000 people, including performance
artist Jeanne Lauren, the hot-pink biker above. Organizers set a 40-foot (12-meter) stick figure
ablaze, along with other works of incendiary art. Its an explosion of creative self-expression, says
Erin Red Thompson, a unicycle riding tuba player and Burning Man veteran. Its the
perfect venue where people can release all inhibitions and I can do the things I love. Though
everyone is welcome, Burning Man may not be for everyone. Nudity, illegal substances, and sexually explicit
themes are as ubiquitous as the high desert winds.

Special Equipment or Comments:
The storm blowing across the Playa made it difficult to keep dust out of my camera, so I held it under my Gore-Tex jacket until I saw a picture I wanted to take. Reloading was a nightmare.
