At ease in the land of his ancestors, a Himba man in northwest Namibia cleans his pipe. Despite little rainfall on average and devastating droughts, the Himba have managed not only to survive but to prosper in the semidesert here by herding cattle, goats, and sheep, and growing and trading for corn. Under programs launched by the Namibian government, the Himba are beginning to manage tourism and wildlife on their land, earning them a share of profits from visitors and the right to once again hunt animals.
