Crossing Paths
Photograph by Nicolas Reynard
South of Tabatinga, near the Itaquaí River, a settler bears witness to a faith that has spread rapidlybut not always coherentlyin the Amazon. "In one Kanamari Indian village," says author Scott Wallace, "I asked some Christian converts to tell me their story of creation, but what I heard was an awfully jumbled tale of Adam and Eve fused with other mythic bits I didn't recognize. These Indians don't have a coherent grasp of their new faith, and have lost most memories of their old one."
