Tangled Tale

Only six years old at death, a child, probably a boy, from a disturbed grave wears a tangled reminder of his humanity. “Water is a mummy’s enemy,” says anthropologist John Verano. “If a body decomposes in a humid place, the hair will slide right off. But in Puruchuco’s dry, dusty climate, it is common to find scalps with hair still attached.” |
