Morro Bay: Safe But Fun
California | By Josiah P.

Do you like to run along the beach or go hiking up a hill? Do you like old-fashioned stores or restaurants? How about a friendly neighbor who is always ready to lend a hand? Well if you do, then you would love to visit or live in Morro Bay, California—"Vacation Playground!" Morro Bay was actually named after one of its inactive volcanoes, Morro Rock.

THE PEOPLE

The town has friendly, active, and hardworking people who enjoy Morro Bay as much as I do. People can get to know the store owners and people in the community very easily. The people make many tourists feel welcome in Morro Bay. The store owners and businessmen are always pleasant and will try to do their jobs well. Most local people go outside and are active instead of staying home and watching TV all day.

STORES AND RESTAURANTS

Along the waterfront are many stores and restaurants. There are great seafood restaurants, but if you prefer a hot dog or hamburger instead, you can get those too. There is an old coffee shop where you can get some coffee and a donut. The coffee shop used to be my grandfather's shoe shop.

There are many shops that sell things like saltwater taffy, antiques, and many other items. There is no Wal-Mart in Morro Bay, but there are other stores that are just as good and better.

SURROUNDINGS

In Morro Bay there is a lot of water activity. There is a great deal of fishing, and you can rent kayaks. So you can go out and see dolphins, otters, and seals. Sometimes you can even see a killer whale! You can also surf and swim or just walk along the beach. Morro Rock (the volcano I mentioned earlier) is right by the beach. Morro Rock is part of a chain of inactive volcanoes.

One of the volcanoes is now called Black Mountain. It is a great spot for hiking and exploring. At the top you can see the rest of the volcanoes. As you hike up the trail, you could see a rabbit or some interesting types of birds like the hummingbird or California quail. If you travel down the road that goes partly up the hill, it leads to a golf course, which is great to play golf or look for golf balls.

A DAY IN MORRO BAY

A possible day in Morro Bay could go like this. Get up in the morning to climb Black Mountain. You could play on the rope swings up there for hours. Then you might walk to the golf course and play golf or look for golf balls. If you get hungry, you could walk down to the waterfront and eat at a restaurant and talk to the friendly waiters. Next you could take a walk down the line of stores and maybe play chess on the giant chessboard, take a swim in the ocean, or try fishing off the pier. Then go to another restaurant or meet your friend and have dinner.
