Many animals make their own light. Others, like this bobtail squid, get their light from glowing bacteria. The bacteria live inside the squid. The squid makes food for the bacteria. In return, the bacteria lights up the squid.

You may have seen fireflies over the summer. Here, thousands of fireflies make this tree look like it is decorated for the holidays. The fireflies use the flashing green light, in the rear of their bodies, to attract mates.
