In February 1922 an astonishing discovery was made in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt. A tomb of a king or pharaoh called Tutankhamun was discovered. It was found by an archaeologist named Howard Carter.
The reason that this discovery was so unique is that the tomb was found intact with all its treasures. When Carter peered through a crack in the wall blocking his way, he saw amazing things. He saw priceless valuables. He saw a golden couch in the shape of a cow native to Egypt. He saw seats and a foldout bed.
When Carter eventually got into the tomb, he saw 100 pairs of shoes, some earrings, and some boomerangs. He also found out that Tutankhamun had been buried with a few board games and several flasks of beer and wine.
King Tut, as he is commonly known, came to the throne at the age of only 9. He died at around 18.
