Fishermen image

A SHINING ALIEN from the deep is hoisted onto the beach in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1930. The man-size tarpon was probably valued more for its bright scales, used for decorative crafts, than for its meat. The photographer who captured this scene, Hugo Brehme, was born in Germany in 1882 and traveled in Africa and Central America with his camera before settling in Mexico City. He operated a photographic studio there, eventually publishing a book of his pictures titled México Pintoresco. This photograph was never published in the magazine, and Brehme did not work extensively for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC.
